2024 Plein Air Painting: Scarborough
Location: Scarborough
Celebrating January 2024 with two distinct coastal locations.
Starting the year off by immersing myself in nature for a day of Plein Air painting, I head down the East Coast, my first stop was Stanwell Tops for a coffee while watching the colourful hang-gliders walk off the edge to catch the morning breeze.
Even though I wanted to capture them in flight, I knew I'd be hanging on to my canvas for dear life in these winds, so I continued South.
I had a specific location in mind, the headlands of Scarborough, with its expansive views facing the amazing Pacific Ocean.
While setting up I was surprised to run into another friendly Plein Air painter, we spent a moment exchanging ideas on vantage points and locations that would make for an interesting study.
I spent about an hour and a half at this site, and I'm reasonably happy with the results.
As the midday sun began to bite, I gave a quick wave goodbye and headed further South for a change of scenery.

The Final Stop: Wombarra Ocean Pool

I say goodbye to Scarborough and end up at the Wombarra Ocean Pool. There are so many beautiful compositional scenes to choose from here:: I eventually settle on the edge of the pool where the tide flows against the wall, washing up bright green seaweed and sending it swirling around.

I was drawn to the sharp, jagged rock formation that lean against the Sothern end of the ocean pool, I spend about an hour and a half on the study, look forward to a swim once the works was complete.

I'm drawn time and time again to this coast.
It's hard to keep track of time when you are working out in nature with all it has to share with you.
